Some of the many available troubleshooting tools test and exercise the system, whereas others gather and format information.
For example, the DEC Verifier and Exerciser Tool (DEC VET) is an online tool that verifies system installations and acceptance. It can also maintain and troubleshoot systems as well as perform load and stress tests on single devices, systems, and networks. DEC VET comes in operating system-specific versions. For more information, see the DEC Verifier and Exerciser Tool User's Guide for Windows NT.
Windows NT maintains an event log file. The event logging service starts automatically when Windows NT is started. Use the Event Viewer to view and manage the event logs.
Start the Event Viewer by clicking on its icon. The icon is located in the Administrative Tools group in Program Manager. Windows NT uses three logs:
System log | Tracks events logged by Windows NT system components (for example, the failure of a driver to load properly). |
Application log | Tracks events logged by applications. | Security log | Tracks changes to the security system and identifies possible security breaches. |
Use the Log menu of the Event Viewer to select the log you need to view. For more information, see the Event Viewer chapter in the Microsoft Windows NT System Guide or use online Help.
