Boot Troubleshooting

Possible CauseAction
Crash during install: Boot device not found.
or
System will not boot from an IDE hard disk drive (HDD).
IDE driver not installed. The driver is not on the Windows NT CD-ROM; use the CMD CSA-64xx IDE driver diskette from the accessories kit.
Operating system software is not installed on the HDD. Install the Windows NT operating system.
System cannot find the boot device. Check the system configuration for correct device parameters. Use the AlphaBIOS firmware to display the hardware configuration. First, from the Boot screen, press [F2] to enter AlphaBIOS Setup. Select Display System Configuration. Verify that the target boot device is listed. Also, go to Utilities - OS Selection Setup, and verify the path.
Environment variables incorrectly set (this could happen if the MLB was replaced, thereby losing the previous configuration information). Check and set the environment variables, if necessary. From AlphaBIOS Setup, go to CMOS Setup and Advanced CMOS Setup. Check the values and correct as necessary. From AlphaBIOS Setup, go to Utilities and select OS Selection Setup. Verify the boot paths.
Bad device name/number or partition number... The system partition value is pointing to an invalid partition. From the AlphaBIOS Setup screen, select Utilities and OS Selection Setup. Press [F9] to validate the selection. To edit the selection, press [F6].
File is not a directory..., or No such file or directory... The osloader value is incorrect. The system partition value is okay. From the AlphaBIOS Setup screen, select Utility and then OS Selection Setup. Press [F9] to validate the selection. To edit the selection, press [F6].
Windows NT could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<winnt root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
The osloadpartition and/or osloadfilename values are incorrect. The best approach is to delete the boot selection and start again. Carefully consider the question, "Is the operating system in the same partition as the osloader?" Typically, the operating system and osloader are in different partitions.
The hard disk drive (HDD) is not correctly formatted, or the requested partition does not exist. Partition and format the HDD using Hard Disk Setup section of AlphaBIOS Setup. Press [F7] for to perform an express setup on disk 0.
There is no software on the requested partition. If the command is pointing to the correct partition, install the software. Otherwise, change the variables to point to the correct partition.
Target boot device is not listed in the Display hardware configuration display because of a SCSI bus problem. Check the cables. Are the cables oriented properly? Are there bent pins?

Check all the SCSI devices for incorrect or conflicting IDs. Refer to the device documentation.

SCSI termination: The SCSI bus must be terminated at the last internal and the last external SCSI peripherals. The last connector of the internal SCSI cable contains a terminator. If there are no external options, the external portion of the SCSI bus is automatically terminated (assuming the SCSI host adapter is in automatic mode, which is the default).
